ACL With a Focus on Continuous Monitoring Print
From Thursday, February 25 2010 -  8:30am
To Friday, February 26 2010 - 4:30pm
Every day

During this 2-day course, you will learn real and practical solutions to getting the most out of the product in the shortest time possible. You will learn with real life examples and data; from a practitioner that has been using ACL for over 15 years.

The first day will revisit the basics of ACL to ensure the participants understand the fundamentals of the tool. Furthermore, the focus will be on how and when to practically use each ACL technique.

Day 1 will include:
* Project organization
* Data imports
* Tables / formats / log files
* Setting up fields and variables
* Filters
* ACL basic functionality
* Sort / Summarize / Joins
* Managing through data issues
* Date fields
* Introduction to Scripts

Day 2 will be focused on establishing a continuous monitoring program using ACL. Scripts will be designed to take advantage of ACL’s ability to store and compare data over time. Specific topics covered will include:

* Advanced scripting techniques
* Group / Loop commands
* ODBC connections
* Types of continuous monitoring procedures
* User input handling / interactive functionality
* Working with dated tables
* Other continuous monitoring techniques

Attendees do not have to be experienced with ACL to recognize the objectives of this course, but moderate levels of prior ACL experience will help in the overall understanding and application of these techniques afterward. Attendees are required to bring a laptop with an ACL license in order to ensure that the hands on exercises can be completed.

Speaker Information: - Sunera LLC

Peter Armstrong, Sunera LLC
Peter is a Principal and founder of Sunera LLC, a leading Florida-based Risk Services firm. Prior to creating Sunera Peter was a Partner with KPMG LLP based in Tampa where he spent most of his time focused on providing business and technology consulting projects of all sizes. Peter started working with ACL in 1991 and has worked with every version of ACL since then. In 1994, he held the first “advanced” ACL training course in North America which was attended by Internal audit professionals from across the US and Canada. Recently, he has taught version 8 and 9 to the Internal Audit departments of OSI, Burger King, RCCL, NCL, and the Cities of Tampa and St Pete. ACL is not that difficult to use, but has many tricks and techniques that can only be taught by someone who has more than 10 years of experience with the product. Peter is a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and an ACL Certified Data Analyst.

Few recent projects.
•Completed a forensic analysis for the Pinellas County School District including the identification of inappropriate payments to vendors or employees, and establishing an automated mechanism to facilitate the board in completing future assessments internally without the need of external consultants. This project included the development of automated ACL scripts to identify transactions to be examined further.

•Completed a detailed investigation into deferred revenue for a professional association that outsources a significant portion of its business. Due to a change in the contract details, the amount of payments to the vendor has changed and both parties were in disagreement regarding the new amounts. In addition to examining the changes to the database made by the outsource partner, we also evaluated the impact of new contract details on the balance owing. All of our testing was completed using the ACL toolset and an independent formal findings report was issued. The result of our findings was approximately $2 Million in favor of our client.
